The San Saba Tennis Team had a very busy weekend on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13. On Friday February 12 the tennis team traveled to Llano to play in the Llano Invitational Tennis Tournament. On Saturday February 13th the tennis team played Killeen Ellison and Copperas Cove. In the Llano Tournament the tennis team came in second place as a team behind Faith Academy on Marble Falls. There were eight teams at the tournament, Faith Academy, San Saba, Fredericksburg, Lago Vista, Liberty Hill, Llano, Leander Rouse, and Leander Vandegrift. Tayler Hibler came in second place in Girls Singles, losing in the finals to Sarah Thomas from Faith Academy, 2-6, 7-6, 10-2. Kobe Cisneroz and Diego Gonzales came in second place in Boys Doubles losing in the finals to Johnson and Bland of Faith Academy 6-3, 6-4. In Boys Singles Marshall McIntosh and Kolton Haverland will play each other for third and fourth place sometime this week. They did not have time to play the match on Friday as we needed to get Marshall off so he could film the girls varsity basketball game Friday night.

On Saturday February 13, the Armadillos played Killeen Ellison at Ellison High School at 9:00 a.m. San Saba lost to Ellison 14 to 5. We were able to win 3 of the 4 number one positions. Tayler Hibler defeated Ellison’s number one player 6-0, 6-3. Tayler and Lauren Dawson defeated Ellison’s number one doubles team 8-5. In boys doubles Kobe Cisneroz and Diego Gonzales defeated Ellison’s number one boys doubles team 8-6. On Saturday afternoon the Armadillos traveled to Copperas Cove and lost to Cove 14 to 5. San Saba won 2 of the 5 number one positions as Kobe Cisneroz and Diego Gonzales defeated Cove’s number one doubles team 9-7. Tayler Hibler and Diego Gonzales also defeated Cove’s number one mixed doubles team 8-4.

I thought our kids competed really well against two very good 5A teams in Ellison and Cove. Copperas Cove went to regionals this past fall in team tennis. Diego Gonzales went undefeated Saturday winning all 5 matches that he played. Players playing on Friday and Saturday were Tayler Hibler, Lauren Dawson, Brittany Moreno, Regan Hartranft, Kelli Cox, Heather Wilcox, Kobe Cisneroz, Diego Gonzales, Marshall McIntosh, Houston Casco, Josh Raiford, B.J. Harbour, Kolton Haverland, Jose Vega and Jonathan Ramirez.

San Saba will have some players playing in the Fredericksburg JV Tournament this week on Thursday, February 18 and on Friday, February 19 we will have several players playing in the Copperas Cove Tournament.
