San Saba Garden Club's "Yard of the Month"
Thursday, November 1, 2007 • Posted November 1, 2007

The San Saba Garden Club’s “Yard of the Month” for October is at 2305 W. Commerce St. and is the home of Mabel Ledbetter. Her friend, Mr. John Earl, has helped Mabel carry out her ideas for the plantings. The circular drive is the entrance to her business, “Mabel’s Happy Curls.” Her customers come around to the back patio filled with mums, hanging baskets, and several feeders. There are four arbors of Lady Banks Rose, and one of them is at least 20 feet tall! She has three Passion Vines, one Trumpet Vine, and a huge Honeysuckle Vine that covers an old propane tank.

There is also a rock garden with cactus and deer horns. She has an unusual tree, an Austree surrounded by mums, and a giant Bradford Pear tree nearby. There is a real water pump dripping water into a pot with a real frog and painted rocks all around. It is a working miniature with a light house at the side. Deer are happy to feed at the corn feeder, and squirrels love the moving bicycle wheel feeder on the old oak. This yard is a wonder, and “Baby” is the friendliest black cat ever!
