Turn Loose
Thursday, January 28, 2010 • Posted January 28, 2010

How hard is it to let go and let God have control of your life? I believe to those who do not know Christ, and to those who have recently obeyed His word, it is hard. But it is equally hard for those who have been Christians for a long time. However, we need to turn loose and let God lead us.

I was reminded of this again recently while reading about Abraham. First, he was called upon to leave everything he knew and everyone he knew, and go to a place where God would lead him (Gen. 12). That would take an incredible amount of faith. Abraham did not argue with God or question why, he just chose to obey.

Later, God would tell him he would have a child through which his descendents would be blessed. The only trouble was that he and Sarah were very old now. But, he trusted in God and had a child in his and Sarah’s old age.

When the child was born and older, he was to offer him as a sacrifice. Could you imagine being told that? If so, do you think you would obey it? That would be hard—especially if you actually liked your child! Abraham took Isaac and the other things needed for the sacrifice. He built the altar, placed the woodaround it, and put the sacrifice, Isaac, on the altar. He then drew back the knife to plunge deep into his heart. But, before he could, an angel of the Lord stopped him. In Genesis 22:12 we read, "Don’t lay a hand on that boy! Don’t touch him! Now I know how fearlessly you fear God; you didn’t hesitate to place your son, your dear son, on the altar for me" (The Message).

The kind of faith Abraham expressed to God is the kind of faith we need to have in our lives today. Is your faith that strong? Have you allowed Satan to convince you that you don’t need a strong faith for God? Do you believe you have the things you do because you provide them—you’re capable enough without God? Abraham always obeyed. He listened and followed the voice of God. Today we have the written Word to guide us and lead us. We need to learn it and then to practice it.

As a result of listening to God, Abraham was blessed beyond measure. Everything he had multiplied. God gave the increase and He desires to do that for you also. Will you let him? Will you turn loose of all the securities you have and put your complete, total trust in God?
