San Saba City Council holds January meeting

The San Saba City Council held a regular meeting on Monday, January 18th in the City Hall Council Chambers at 6 p.m. Mayor Ken Jordan announced a quorum present. Martha Leigh Whitten gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

Scott Glaze, Public Works Director and Council member Martha Leigh Whitten presented the "Employee of the Month" award to Jesse Gonzalez. Jesse has worked for the City of San Saba in the Parks Department for around 1 1/2 years. He is a Volunteer Fire Department member and takes care of his three year old son whose mother is in the military. Jesse will enjoy the one day off with pay and the $25 gift certificate at a local restaurant.

The following items were approved by the Council:

1. Minutes from the December 1 and 21, 2009 Council Meetings.

2. Payment of bills.

3. Resolution No. 2010-01 designating the San Saba News and Star as the official town newspaper.

4. Accepted the 2009 Racial Profiling Report.

5. Resolution No. 2010-03 variance to Noise Ordinance No. 1967-4.

Judge Les Dawson explained Resolution No. 2010-02, a Contract with a Midland, Texas Law firm to collect outstanding debts owed to the city. After discussion, the Resolution was approved.

The next Council meeting was set for Monday, February 8th at 6 p.m.

City Manager, Stan Weik gave the following report:

a. Update on Water Park Law Suit - lawyers are in negotiation.

b. Alco has acquired paperwork and permits to build on the West edge of town.

c. San Saba hosted a Regional City Manager’s meeting last Friday. Twelve City Managers were given a tour and update of San Saba’s improvements and new businesses.

d. The City workers were able to take care of the recent cold weather problems because they planned and prepared.

e. A bid has been made to purchase the nursing home that was in the process of being built and closed before finished.

f. The Jacobs company is expanding their business in San Saba.

g. Discussed health insurance because rates have increased 20% over the already increased amount in the budget.

h. The 2nd Annual Awards Banquet will be March 11th.

Keith Harris, Golf Course Manager, reported making plans for the 2010 Tournament.

The Camping Ground next to the Golf Course has continual use with an overflow expected next month.

Roger Verette, Electric Department, gave a report on the working conditions during the cold weather.

Al Hamrick’s Code Enforcer Report included the Commercial Bank, Hill Country Transit and the Alco Store.

Gale Ivy, City Secretary, announced that yellow daffodil bulbs are on sale. Buy and plant now and we’ll see how beautiful they are in the spring.

Scott Glaze showed the following on video: street repairs, water and sewer leak and repairs, new storage shed to lock-up and secure tools, tree trimming, big forklift used for big jobs, rock work at the golf course on #17, T-ball field work and a new light pole at Mill Pond Park.

Mayor Jordan adjourned the meeting.
