7th Grade Lady Dillos win San Saba Tournament
Thursday, January 14, 2010 • Posted January 14, 2010

The 7th grade Lady Dillos finished a perfect 3-0 week by winning the San Saba Jr High Basketball Tournament on Saturday, January 9, 2010. On Monday, Brady came visiting the Jr. High Lady Dillos. The game was on the ragged side as this was the first game after the holidays. Both teams being out of shape after the layoff led to more fouls and more hully gully playing. Brady played a zone which the ladies have not seen this year. Using defense and shooting by the guards provided a 9-4 first quarter lead, but the 2nd quarter ended up 2-2 as neither team could find the basket. Both teams had their point guards foul out. San Saba kept up the pressure and hit a few shots to win the game 28-17. We did not get much scoring from our posts as they would be fouled when they were shooting. Problem was our posts hit only 8 of 27 free throws. Record: 6-3 District 5-2.

San Saba drew Goldthwaite first in the tournament. San Saba played a very good first three quarters, shooting well and rebounding well. Fouls trouble started creeping up which hurt the defense as San Saba gave up 18 points the first three quarters. The other two games we gave up that many points we lost. It was fortunate San Saba had 35 points at that juncture. Things went down hill fast when both San Saba posts fouled out and Goldthwaite, who has overall good size started really dominating the boards and getting fouled. Goldthwaite made 7 free throws during the last quarter and scored 16 points overall. San Saba scored 7 points to hang on to a 42-34 victory.

In the finals, San Saba played Brady who had beaten Hamilton. San Saba started out very slow, not playing very good defense and missing tons of shots under the basket to fall behind 7-4 after one quarter. San Saba scored 4 points in the last minute of the half to take a 11-10 lead at the half.

Lauryn Tatsch, Cassandra Gonzales, Shea Scott, A. J. Gamboa, and Meredith Meador are B teamers who suited out in the tournament. After the half, San Saba came out and played an excellent quarter as they outscored Brady 13-0 during the quarter. With B teamers getting to play much of the last quarter, San Saba still outscored Brady 15-6 in the last quarter. The 6 points came in the latter part of the quarter. A thoroughly dominating half as San Saba outscored Brady 28-6 in the last half. Record: 8-3
