Thursday, January 7, 2010 • Posted January 7, 2010

In the last two months, two area residents marked milestones as volunteers for the National Weather Service.

Mrs. Charlotte Spence of San Saba 7NW completed 10 years of service as a volunteer Cooperative Weather Observer. Mrs. Spence began collecting temperature and precipitation data on a daily basis on December 1, 1999.

Mrs. Jean Sowers of Red Bluff Crossing completed 40 years of service as a volunteer Cooperative Weather Observer. Mrs. Sowers began collecting rainfall data on November 1, 1969.

This data is collected and sent to the National Weather Service daily. After completing each month, the data is sent to Asheville, North Carolina where it becomes part of the national archive and is used as part of the national climate database. The data is quality controlled and published as part of the Climate of the United States.

Congratulations to Mrs. Spence and Mrs. Sowers for their dedication and service to their community and the National Weather Service.
