Thursday, December 10, 2009 • Posted December 10, 2009

The time has come once again to reward our shooters on their progression to the next rank in their NRA Marksman Qualification Course. This quarter light-rifle shooter Ron Gerhart has achieved the qualifications for the level of Expert. There is only one more rank for Ron to complete before achieving the highest rank in the NRA Marksman Qualification Course.

Newcomer and light-rifle shooter,Micheal McKinnerney has achieved his first rank, Pro-Marksman, in his Qualification Course. Caelob Hardman has achieved his first level of the NRA Marksman Qualification Course as Pro-Marksman as well. Michael McKinnerney, Emily Esquivel, and Meredith Meador have received their safety qualification awards which mark the beginning of their NRA Marksman Qualification Course.

Each level can be completed by shooting a certain number of points on a series of targets. A target is scored using a bulls-eye; the center of the bulls-eye is ten points and each outer ring in descending order to six. There are six levels starting at Pro-Marksman, then Marksman, Marksman-First Class, Sharpshooter, Expert, and Distinguished Expert. The Shooters can achieve their ranks using precision rifle or light rifle and shooting all targets in the standing position or a combination of standing, kneeling, and prone.

4-H rifle team distributes awards each quarter based on targets shot with designated ranks within that quarter. After achieving each rank the shooter is given a certificate with their name, rank, and date on it along with a rocker patch stating the new qualification. As the levels progress the qualification standards are raised. The Number of targets and score of the targets increase with each rank.

This year has given the San Saba Shooting Sports team a handful of new members. We are very thankful to have them on the team and enjoy practicing with them. It gives us great joy to see them progress as shooters as they strive to reach their next ranks in the Marksman Qualification Courses. Keep up the good work guys!
