Operation Orphans, Inc. continued the "Take a Child Hunting" program Saturday, November 21st. During the second hunt of this season's program, 33 boys from seven children's homes hunted at twelve area ranches. During the hunt, the boys harvested 25 animals. Animals harvested were nine whitetail does, two spikes, seven management bucks, two feral hogs, two axis, one aoudad, one black buck antelope and one sika. The participating ranches use this program as a means to manage deer numbers. The youngsters enjoy a wonderful opportunity to experience the outdoors.
Children homes participating were Constancia Home, Melvin; Methodist Home Boys Ranch, Waco; Azleway Children's Services, Grand Prarie; Cherokee Home, Cherokee; Texas Baptist Home, Round Rock; Texas Pythian Home, Weatherford; and Collard Home, Glen Rose.
Area ranches hosting the hunters and their guides were Blue Mountain Ranch, Mason; Goad Family Ranch, Mason; High Lonesome, Mason; Karl Ransleben, Gillespie; Operation Orphans Game Pasture, Mason; Patti & Richard Myrick, Mason; Rancho 359, Kimble; Rocking M Ranch, San Saba; Shaw Ranch, Mason; Woelfel Ranch, Mason; Wojtek Ranch, Concho; and YMCA Roberts Ranch, Kerr.
Saturday morning breakfast cooks were representatives of the Mason Boy Scouts James Durst, Levi Hofmann, and Jeff Durst. Fredricksburg Bakery once again donated delicious baked goods for everyone to enjoy. Mason Bottling supplied soft drinks for the sack lunches that the groups enjoyed Saturday.
The "Take a Child Hunting" program for the 2009 season will continue with hunts December 5th, December 12th, and January 9th. Since the program's beginning in 1960, 16,960 boys and girls have participated with a total game harvest of 16,673 animals.
