San Saba ISD participates in the National School Lunch Program. As a requirement of this program and the state program called Square Meals, the school district is guided by some very specific rules. For example, the fat content in foods is regimented, as is the amount of sugar products in food and fried food is absolutely forbidden. The rules are very strict and most times not very popular with kiddos and parents. Another component of the school lunch program is the Summer Nutritional Program. Texas law requires public school food authorities in Texas with 60 percent or more of the enrolled students eligible for free or reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program to provide a summer nutrition program. Because more than 60 percent of San Saba ISD students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals, we will be required to provide a nutrition program during the Summer of 2010 for a minimum of 30 calendar days.

San Saba ISD was required to offer this program several years ago; however, when surveyed about participation, the ISD received responses from parents that indicated participation would be minimal or non-existent. Very soon, the ISD will be mailing home or delivering home through the Thursday folder, a survey that will measure the estimated participation the District will have in such a program if offered. If parents will not be bringing students to the school to participate in the Summer Feeding Program, then a waiver to offer this program can be submitted on behalf of the District.

Please watch for this survey coming to homes in the very near future. Very often, the school food service program provides the only breakfast and lunch that a student will receive in a day. It is very important to the ISD that we continue to provide that meal, if parents will be actively involved in the program by bringing their child to participate.

If you have questions regarding the regular school lunch program or the summer feeding program, please do not hesitate to contact the food service director, Diane Wood or call my office to speak to me. We always encourage you to get the answer to questions that you have so that you will be better informed.

We hope you will all join us at Early for the Armadillos playoff game against the Cisco Loboes. The contest will begin at 7:30 pm on Friday, and the Armadillos will be the visiting team at this contest! Come on out and show your support. As well, don’t forget that basketball is full swing. The Lady ‘Dillos will be hosting a very large tournament of 20 teams. You can have your choice of sporting entertainment this week and weekend. As well, parents please be aware that we are entering the 3rd six weeks of the school year. This six weeks period has fewer instructional days, so please monitor your child’s progress. Your child’s teachers, principals and counselors will assist you or your child in any way to help them be successful. If you have questions, please call the campus where your child attends school. The Thanksgiving holiday is upon us next week and school will be released on 11/25 through 11/27. Christmas break is from December 21 continuing through January 4th for students. Teachers will be back at work on January 4, 2010. Please access the District’s website for up-to-date information.
