Edna Katherine (Kay) McKee

Edna Katherine (Kay) McKee was born on March 25, 1917 to Walter and Mary Lena Haynie Peel in Kemp, TX. She was an only child. Kay was raised in Kemp and graduated from Kemp High School as its Valedictorian in 1934. She then went on to receive a B.A. in English and Spanish from North Texas State University. She chose to go into teaching and began a career that touched the lives of many students. She taught in Dallas County and Kaufman County before coming to San Saba to teach in 1942. In San Saba ISD, she taught English and Spanish for 35 years.

In 1950, Kay married Henry Clyde McKee of San Saba. They were members of San Saba’s First Baptist Church where Kay taught Sunday School, was active in the WMU and in the work of the Calvary Baptist Mission. Kay was also a member of the Pierian Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, San Saba County Historical Museum Foundation, and the EMS.

Kay died in Brownwood, Texas on Sunday morning, November 1, 2009. She is survived by her brother-in-law, Ward McKee and extended family and friends.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Riley and Rev. Sam Crosby officiating. Interment will follow at the San Saba Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
