San Saba has winners at the Senior Women’s Amateur Golf Association of Texas Tournament! Anita Miles captured second Low Net in the third flight! To say she was thrilled, is an understatement. Jo Ann Snow won closest to the pin in the sixth flight! Hattie Rogers had a great tournament, was sitting in first position in the seventh flight after the first day play and was beat out by only one stroke on the second day. Sandee Hartley was leading the sixth flight the first day but was bested on the second day.

Each flight awards only First Low Gross, Second Low Gross, First Low Net, and Second Low Net. This year the organization has designed a medallion in the shape of the state of Texas and the initials of the organization engraved on the state with a different jewel on the medallion according to what position you won. All of the ladies were pleased with this new design and now it will be the traditional award each year.

There were over 100 women participating in this event. San Saba was well represented as six ladies attended: Anita Miles, Jo Ann Snow, Hattie Rogers, Bobbie Churchill, Sandee Hartley, and Bette Odom.

The ladies had a wonderful time of great golf and renewing friendships, as they have been attending several years. The course was extremely hard with many water hazards and sand traps protecting all the greens.

One of the highlights of the Awards Dinner for the San Saba ladies was when the association president, Charleen Gallo, gave homage to Betty Sue Low. Betty Sue loved the organization and was a favorite of all the ladies, with her wit and humor. She asked Linda Owens to recant her story about Betty Sue. Linda told the beautiful story with tears in her eyes, of how when Betty Sue was gravely ill she had promised her she would take her riding on her Harley motorcycle, but it didn’t happen. Linda is a mortician and she was asked by the family to do the cremation and she said it would be her honor. She took the ashes and urn and put them in her bag and gave Betty Sue her promised ride as she brought her ashes to San Saba on her Harley! We were all touched by such a tribute to our dear golfing friend, Betty Sue Low.

We had our old faithfuls, Dorothy Sterner, Becky Hardin, and Pat Ribb that kept “the home fires burning”, as they made the regular play day on April 3, 2008 and had fun in the sun.

The business meeting will be April 10, 2008. The Four Lady Tournament will be May 17, 2008, so it’s time to be getting your team together for a really fun tournament. And the only advice I have is, you gotta get out there and keep on “swinging!”
