James Ray (Jim) Cromer

James Ray (Jim) Cromer, 75, went to be with the Lord on April 4, 2008 at his home in San Saba, Texas. Born in Channing , Texas to Albert Lee and Beatrice Cromer in 1932, he was reared in New Home and Lubbock, Texas. On June 2, 1955, he married Alta Johanna Verheul in Lubbock, Texas.

Jim was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Saba. A San Saba County rancher for 33 years, he never really “retired.” He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who deeply loved the land, his community, his family, and friends. He will be buried Monday at Shaw Bend Cemetery, on the ranch that he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Maarten Kees; and brother, William Maxwell Cromer of Lubbock.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alta Verheul Cromer; sons: James Lee Cromer, wife, Joanne, and children, Clayton and Molly, of Oklahoma City; Maarten Karl Cromer, wife, Deanne, and children, Tucker and Karlee, of San Saba; John David Cromer, wife, Dena, and children, Colby and Colton, of Denton, TX; and Joel Patrick Cromer, wife, Lenora, and children, Tommy, Chris, Emily, Adam and Audrey, of San Antonio. He is also survived by a very loving sister-in-law and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services were held, Monday, April 7, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in San Saba, with Rev. Sam Crosby officiating. Interment followed at the Shaw Bend Cemetery in San Saba County.

The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Howell-Doran Funeral Home in San Saba.
