The Real Reason for Red Ribbon Week!
Thursday, October 22, 2009 • Posted October 22, 2009

At the end of October each year we celebrate Red Ribbon Week. The Red Ribbons we wear during this time are a symbol of unity against the illegal use of drugs. This public display began in response to the kidnapping and murder of Federal Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena in 1985 while he was investigating drug traffickers. In response to his death, angered parents across the country began wearing red ribbons to take a stand against the illegal use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and to show their support for drug-free youth. Red Ribbon Week allows students, parents, educators, community groups, and others to look at the work being done to stop the spread of drugs and to draw attention to the millions of people who have pledged to live drug-free.

Central Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse has challenged the local businesses, students and staff at local school districts to each make personal pledges to live “drug free 24/7 – the way to go”. Those who committed to leading a drug free lifestyle, signed the Red Ribbon Week Pledge card. Thank you for your pledge, and thank you for being “drug free”.
