San Saba's Annual Alumni Golf Tournament
Thursday, October 8, 2009 • Posted October 8, 2009

The San Saba Annual Alumni Golf Tournament for 2009 was held October 3, 2009 with thirty players. This is an annual tournament that is held in conjunction with the alumni events. In the past it has been during the summer but there were complications and the tournament was scheduled for this year with Homecoming and the Homecoming Events. It was a fun successful tournament and it may be that this will be the date for next year. It will be announced later in 2010.

The Co-Chair, John Reavis, welcomed all the players and thanked them for participating and they were presented with a gift of tees, a logo ball, key chain, in a San Saba River Golf Course cozie, very fitting for the event!

There has been great fun and rivalry every year, especially between the two Co-Chairs, Anita Miles and John Reavis, as neither has ever captured first place. This was their year, at last! The two teams tied for first place with a scalding score of 57 (fifteen under). Anita’s team members were David Potts, Jerry Mintor, Dane Mahan, and Eddie Edwards. John’s team members were Kade Riley, Sandra Baskin, Jimmy Ellis, and Ralph Wilson.

The Shahan Team captured second place with a great score of 60 (twelve under). The Shahan team was Jimmy Shahan, the grandpa, and Keith Shahan and his boys and Jim Parker. It’s always fun to have a family team playing. This tournament is strictly for fun and fellowship so if you want to make up your team it’s ‘good to go’.

The defending champions from 2008 the Ivy Team, consisting of Mike Ivy, Debbie Lee, Jimmy Shook, and Mike Connors came roaring in with a 61. Last year this team shot an incredible 59 and they reminded me of the article in the paper last year stating that it was a ‘questionable’ 59. So I received a great deal of flack with my team’s score of 57. But I just smiled and took it and took the prize money!

The almost all girl’s team, the Hardy team shot a great round of 63. Shelby Hardy headed up this team, as she is now on a golf scholarship at Sam Houston and is an active member of their golf team. You can expect great things in the golfing world from Shelby Hardy! Her mother, Betty Sue Hardy, and her aunt, Olga Cantu, Jo Anne Humphry, and a friend Barrak, made up this team.

The other team was some alumni’s that often make it in for the tournament and they also shot a 63. This team consisted of Bobby Rich, David Smart, Johnny Harkey, Scott Glaze, and Don Riggs. Even if you don’t have your own team we will place you if you will sign up. The more alumni’s we can get the better. We expect this tournament to become one of the highlights of Homecoming Weekend in San Saba!

All of the scores were excellent and no one seemed to notice the occasional showers.

The Chair offered a mulligan to the players as a donation to the Alumni Association and made almost $300 and at the presentation of awards Keith Shahan, the president of the Alumni Association, thanked the participants and the Co-Chairs, John Reavis and Anita Miles for another successful tournament!

All you alumni’s don’t want to miss this in 2010!
