San Saba's 8th grade Dillos used a diverse attack on offense and a stingy defense to capture a 24-8 victory over Dublin in Dublin last Thursday night.
Dublin kicked to the Dillos to start the game. Kelan Verette returned the kick 10 yards. The Dillo offense was slow to start. Jordan Watson ran for 4. Watson was stopped for no gain the next play. A pass to Cosme Diaz was incomplete. Kelan Verette punted the next play and got off a beauty of about 40 yards. The Dillos defense went to work. Daniel Calderon, Cosme Diaz, Kolton Ellis, Brian Rogers, Kristian McCoury, Ismael Ramirez, J.T. Hibler, Dylan Rosales all played good defense. Dublin punted. The punt was blocked by Ruben Aguirre. Aguirre fell on the ball and the Dillos took over near midfield. A pass from Kelan Verette to Cosme Diaz netted 15 yards; Jordan Watson ran for 5. Verette was sacked for a 10 yard loss. Watson got the ball back on an option play. The Dillos gave the ball over on downs. Dublin made a 15 yard run. The Dillo defense got tough as Kolton Ellis, Jordan Watson, Brian Rogers, Dustin Sloan, Dallas Caldwell, Brandon Amstead and Daniel Calderon piled it on the Lions. Dublin punted as the quarter ended.
The second quarter started with San Saba on its own 35 yard line. Watson ran for 3 yards. Verette 5, Watson added 6 more. A pass from Verette to Diaz gained 40 yards. Watson was stopped for no gain. He came back with an 8 yard carry on an option from Verette. A pass from Verette to Diaz got the first touchdown. A pass from Verette to Watson added PAT 8-0 Dillos. San Saba kicked to Dublin. Brian Rogers, Ashton Krueger and Kolton Ellis team up on a tackle. Dylan Rosales and Daniel Calderon played good defense. Dublin fumbled and Kolton Ellis fell on the ball for the Dillos. Jordan Watson had runs of 12 and 5 yards. Cosme Diaz ran for 17; Verette added 8; Watson 8 and then 2 yards. Kelan Verette ran in from 5 yards out for a touchdown. A pass to Daniel Calderon got the extra points. 16-0 Dillos.
San Saba's offensive line of Ashton Krueger, Ruben Aguirre, Daniel Calderon, Cosme Diaz, Cameron Rossi, Ismael Ramirez, Wesley Gates, Gunner Hibler, Brandon Amstead, Kristian McCoury, Brian Rogers and Jerry Davila blocked well.
San Saba kicked to Dublin. The Lions returned the kick to the Dillo 45 yard line. The Lions drove to the Dillo 3 yard line. San Saba put up a good goal line stand on Big Hits by defensive leaders Jordan Watson, Kolton Ellis, Ruben Aguirre, Daniel Calderon, Kelan Verette, Dallas Caldwell, Cosme Diaz, Ismael Ramirez, Kristian McCoury, Brian Rogers and J.T. Hibler. The Dillos took 16-0 lead to the locker at halftime.
San Saba kicked to Dublin to start the second half, Dublin returned the ball to the San Saba's 15 yard line. The Dillo defense held Dublin out. The Lions gave up the ball on the Dillo 10. Verette ran for 7 yards; Watson was stopped for no gain. Watson added runs of 5 and 12 yards; Kelan Verette had a 65 yard touchdown run called back on a holding penalty. Watson ran for 3. A pass from Verette to Diaz gained 35 yards; Watson ran for 5 then 4 yards; Verette added 12; Watson 7 more. Verette lost 10 on a sac. The quarter changed with San Saba at the Dublin 15. Kelan scrambled to get a touchdown the next play. Diaz run for the PAT was good but came back due to a penalty. A pass from Verette to Daniel Calderon got the 2 points back 24-0 Dillos in the 4th quarter.
San Saba kicked to Dublin. Dublin passed the ball. Kolton Ellis, Kelan Verette, J.T. Hibler and Cosme Diaz played good pass defense. Dublin eventually scored. A pass for the PAT was good 24-8 Dillos. Dublin passed to San Saba. Ruben Aguirre returned the kick 10 yards. Jordan Watson ran for 5; Dallas Caldwell broke loose on a 40 yard run; Watson added 1; Verette 6 then 5. A penalty lost 5. Verette gained 10. The game ended with a first and goal for San Saba at the Dublin 10 yard line. It was a good hard fought and earned victory for the Dillos. The 8th grade Dillos play Bangs at Rogan Field on Thursday night.
