Heritage Day and San Saba County Boy Scouts of America
Thursday, October 25, 2007 • Posted October 25, 2007

San Saba County is home of Boy Scout Troop 55 and Cub Scout Pack 55, both of which were represented at the recent Heritage Days Celebration in the Mill Pond Park. Cub Scouts, comprised of younger, elementary aged boys, manned a booth selling popcorn and kites. The Boy Scout Troop, comprised of middle school through high school aged boys, set up a replica of a traditional scout campsite complete with tent, chuck box, and campfire area. The boys also constructed an on-site Monkey Bridge (pictured), as a demonstration of some of the skills learned in their outdoor adventures. This bridge required timber selection and wood cutting techniques, along with knot tying, lashing, and team work to complete. As well, it took a little bravery on the boy’s part, to climb up that high and walk across this rope bridge that they built. Boys can also learn knife and axe safety, camp-fire building, tent construction, campsite safety, first aid, hiking skills, and safe swimming techniques, just to name a few of the myriad of skills development opportunities scouting has to offer. Scouting is designed to help equip boys with many of the skills essential in becoming a competent outdoorsman as well as productive citizen. The Scouting program works on levels of achievement. Beginning with the first year Cub and progressing through to the older Boys Scouts, there are levels of requirements that a boy must earn to be graduated up to the next level of scouting. The only exception to that is an age separation in the early middle school aged boys. As well, Scouting promotes being reverent to God, loyal to country, staying physically fit, and being honorable. Scouting also offers opportunity for adults to enjoy as an adult leader or supporter.
