The San Saba County Commissioners Court struck a blow against the blackbird population inhabiting the trees around the courthouse this week. The birds were fed grain in the trees and on the courthouse roof and then filled the feeders with grain mixed with poison. More than 8,000 blackbirds died as a result of the feeding under the supervision of Billy F. Kidd, county agent, assisted by Jess Banta.
Ernest L. Wood was hired as Constable of Precinct No. 1 and City Nightwatchman. Wood was selected from a group of seven applicants and will begin his duties on Thursday, Oct. 1.
The 1960 poll tax is now available at the county tax office. Voters will need their poll tax receipt in order to vote.
Those called to appear for grand jury service for the October session include Lee Roy Eckert, A.A. Raesener, Sheral Colburn, T.C. Womack, W.G. Kolb Jr., Lloyd D. Smith, M.A. Terry and T.H. West, all of San Saba; R.T. Altizer, Clyde Estep Jr., Tommie Joe Yates, and James Kuykendall, Cherokee; John Clark McGregor, M.O. Tripp, Richland Springs; F.A.Sharp, Pontotoc; and Earl Stoner, Star Rt., Mercury.

We call special attention to the announcement of ownership of The Hotel Coffee Shop to Mr. and Mrs. Heslep. They solicit continued patronage for this popular and up-to-date eating place. They have secured an expert cook and have experienced help in the dining room.
While busy among the corn at his crib, Mr. Young Pierce came in contact with a full grown rattlesnake which bit him in his right hand. He at once gave first aid and then medical aid, and is doing all right at this time.
Mr. Harris of the Liberty Lunch Room has installed a refrigerator window display at his place of business. This addition adds much to the front of his eating place, and gives a touch of distinction to the place.
The Bend Pecan Growers Association have sold 200,000 pounds, or approximately seven cars of pecans to Henry Stallings, & Co. to be delivered October, November and December.

At the close down Tuesday night the gins of San Saba county had the following record to their respective credit: Warehouse Co. gin, 440 bales; Farmers Gin, 344, Richland Spgs., 229; Velma, 228; Harkeyville, 350; The W.T. Linn Cotton Yard showed receipts of cotton sold, 485 bales.
San Saba needs more business houses, more rent houses and better church houses. She has already prepared to have more and better school rooms.
E.B. House has bought the E.H. Miller farm in the McMillin community from L.O. Hicks of San Angelo.
W.J. Moore left Friday to go to Oklahoma to look after his cattle interests there. He recently bought some 1500 head of cattle and is going to receive them, besides he has just sold some 500 head.
