The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees met for a Regular Meeting on Monday, September 14th.
President Darrin Barker established a quorum present and called the meeting to order followed by prayer and everyone joined in with the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
Brian Sours, the new band director, presented his plan and direction of the band program for this year. There are concerns because 77 signed up to be in the band for this year but less than half are in the program. There was praise and comments for the band and about the direction of Mr. Sours' plans.
Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze reported the following:
A. The two grants that have been received will be used for the High School and Middle Schools and the Stimulus money will be used for the Elementary School.
B. A meeting on Friday, September 18th, will be held at noon on how to distribute funds.
C. The October School Board meeting will be Monday, October 12th at 6 p.m.
D. The National Honor Society administrative policy was presented to the Board.
E. The Gifted & Talented Policy was presented to the Board.
F. A letter regarding the H1N1 (Swine Flu) Virus was presented. Sanitizing and good hygiene is being stressed in the classrooms and sports activities.
G. The street in front of the Middle School will be a one-way street during a limited time during the day for safety reasons. Vehicles will not be able to turn from Wallace Street onto South 10th Street during the hours of 7:00 a.m. extending to 8:00 a.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. extending to 4:00 p.m.
H. The Truant Officer position has been vacated and applications will be accepted for a replacement.
I. The City of San Saba is enforcing the state law for No Cell Phones in School Zones during school hours. Signs are on order to be installed and law enforcement will be on patrol.
J. Worth the Wait Survey will be implemented at the school.
K. There was a good turnout for the substitute list and training.
L. An Anonymous Donor has given a grant to the 4th and 7th grades to go to Austin, Texas to the Texas History Museum. The Grant includes lunch, transportation and the Museum charge.
M. Information regarding the Tax Ratification has been prepared.
The Board approved the following items:
1. Minutes from August 28, 2009 Budget meeting.
2. Payment of bills.
3. Financial report.
Ashley Stewart, Assistant Superintendent, gave the following report:
a. The new CSCOPE curriculum is going very well - students have positive comments about it and there is a limited amount of homework and more classroom work.
b. Math and Science are the weak areas for students.
c. Teachers are getting supplies and preparing for Open House on Tuesday, September 15th.
Athletic Director Pannell reported that there will be two Cross Country events the end of the month; there have been some injuries in football and some illnesses.
Nancy Oliver, from the Booster Club, presented the Board a check for $1,100 to be used for video equipment for the basketball program.
Elementary Principal Shackelford reported 274 students enrolled at this time; some students were out with a stomach virus; Elementary is in the progress of testing; paraprofessionals are helping with the new CSCOPE curriculum and training and students are adjusting very well to CSCOPE; Elementary School is preparing for Open House on Tuesday, September 15th.
Middle School Principal Bohensky reported an enrollment of 206; Friday Sept. 18th will be recognition time from 9-11 a.m.; the pep rallies have been great; the progress reports were mailed out Monday, September 14th; Leslie McIntosh and Vicki Key have been trained to teach Worth The Wait; the 8th grade parents will meet Tuesday September 22nd at 6 p.m. to review CSCOPE; preparing for Open House; the Middle School weekly newsletter is posted on the SSISD website.
High School Principal Stewart reported 204 students; getting ready for Open House; The Little Dilloette Camp will be Saturday, September 19th; Seniors will be going to Brownwood on September 29th; two cross country events are coming up; the Band is practising for a contest; students are cooperating with the new cell phone rules, there is good communications with staff and have great kids.
During the New Business the Board took action on the following items:
A. Budget amendments were approved for the General Fund, Stabalization Funds, and Vision 2020 Grant.
B. Authorized Buck Martin, Business Manager’s signature to be added to bank signature cards to commit to CD’s, Access CD’s and renew CD’s.
C. Reviewed procedures for on-line banking.
D. Designated 10 holidays for the 2009-2010 school year.
E. Designated Jackie Dyer and Linda Hardy as election officials for the October 6th Tax Ratification Election.
F. Reviewed travel reimbursement policy.
G. An agreement to abide by rules when teaching Worth the Wait program.
President Barker adjourned the meeting.
