Indians Battle Flames
Thursday, September 10, 2009 • Posted September 10, 2009

As was the scene around Central Texas Friday night with many games being suspended due to lightning, the Cherokee Indians had to return to Marble Falls Faith Academy Saturday evening to finish their contest. The game was suspended with 1:24 remaining in the 1st quarter with Faith Academy leading 8-14. The Flames had scored on a 50 yard pass play and a 56 yard interception return and PAT. The Indians got on the board at the 1:32 mark as Jesse Perez scored on a 32 yard run. Tucker Corsi kicked the PAT.

As the game resumed Saturday, Faith Academy had the ball but lost it on a fumble recovered by Corsi. The Indians couldn’t hold on in their offensive series and fumbled it back to the Flames.

As the 2nd quarter began, the Flames had another fumble which was recovered by Corsi. A few plays later, the Indians were threatening to score but fumbled the ball back to the Flames. The Indian defense came through as Josh Perry forced the Flames’ quarterback into an intentional grounding penalty from the endzone.

The Indians got the safety which made the score 10-14. Both teams played good defensive ball the remainder of the half.

The 3rd quarter started much the same way that the 2nd quarter ended until the Indians got a break on an interception by Nieves Solis. The Indians were able to convert this into an 11 yard TD reception from Stephen Austermann to Josh Perry. The PAT failed, but the TD was enough to give the Indians their first lead of the game, 16-14.

The 4th quarter continued the trend of good defense for both teams until the last 53 seconds of the game. The Indians extended their lead on a 6 yard run by Perez. Corsi added the PAT to put the Indians up 24-14. The Flames wasted little time getting back in the game as they scored on a 25 yard run and kicked the PAT to get within 2 points of the Indians at 24-22. With :18 remaining in the game, the Flames lined up for an onside kick. Austermann recovered the kick for the Indians and the offense ran the clock out to get their second win of the season.

The Indians play at Moran Friday at 7:30.
