Indians Outrun Hornets

The Cherokee Indians 2009 season started off with their opening game being forfeited by the Star Tigers who were short a player.

To give everybody some playing time, the Indians scrimmaged the Lometa Hornet JV squad. The scrimmage went very well for the Indians, who outscored the Hornets 50-24. One and a half minutes into the game, Tucker Corsi scored on a 5 yard run and kicked the PAT. Nieves Solis intercepted a Hornet pass on their next possession. The Indians, however, ended up with a safety. The Indians’ next possession resulted in a touchdown pass from Stephen Austermann to Josh Perry for 20 yards. Corsi kicked the PAT. With 0:36 remaining in the 1st quarter, Jorden Cooks recovered a Hornet fumble.

Early in the 2nd quarter, Lometa ended a Cherokee possession with an interception. The Hornets scored on a 5 yard pass play and kicked the PAT. The 2nd quarter ended with Cherokee leading 16-10.

Lometa took the lead, 16-18, less than a minute into the 3rd quarter on a 59 yard run and PAT. 12 seconds later, Corsi scored on a 60 yard run and kicked the PAT to put the Indians back on top, 24-18. Lometa’s next possession was halted by an interception by Solis. Jesse Perez finished the drive with a 49 yard run. The PAT failed. The Indians got the ball back when Trey Shannon recovered a Hornet fumble. The Indians got on the board again with 3:31 remaining in the 3rd quarter when EJ Borchers scampered for 51 yards and Stephen Austermann added the PAT.

The 4th quarter started out with a fumble recovery by Lometa and a 5 yard TD run to make the score 38-24. With 6:00 remaining in the contest, Borchers scored on a 60 yard run. The PAT failed. The Indians added another TD on a 42 yard run by Damion Cooks. The PAT failed but the Indians came away with a 50-24 victory.

The Indians will play at Faith Academy in Marble Falls this Friday at 7:30. Faith Academy is located at 3151 East RR 1431 in Marble Falls.

The field is 3 miles east of Hwy. 281 on RR 1431.
