San Saba Garden Club holds March meeting
Thursday, March 27, 2008 • Posted March 27, 2008

Twenty three members of the San Saba Garden Club met at their Club House March 4, 2008 with Nancy Nelson presiding.

Gail Bruner and Anna Wilson reported that the exterior of the building is being renovated. The garden club received a grant from the city to help with this expense. Stan Weik, City Manager and Farrell Whitley, who is responsible for our beautiful Mill Pond Park, helped get the exterior of the building sandblasted. Our next project will be a new entrance ramp, painting the trim and adding new doors. After this is finished the landscaping will begin and soon the historic clubhouse will be as beautiful as the park.

Carol Littlefield reported that a burr oak will be planted in Janet Red’s memory with an identifying plaque. The tree will be planted in the fall in Mill Pond Park.

Dixie Hewitt, our guest speaker, has a wonderful antique garden in San Saba. She is passionate about antique roses and encouraged us to plant them because they have lovely scents and withstand the climate in this area. She gave us a list of the best roses and the history behind many of them. Many of us have already planted some of the species she recommended.

All enjoyed a salad luncheon and dessert hosted by Aileen Roberts, Sally Whitely and Marilyn Miller and Nelda Edgmon, chairman. The meeting adjourned at l:00 pm.

Our next meeting April 1 will feature Ferrell Whitley. He will speak on the Mill Pond Park gardens. Any guest wanting to attend should contact a garden club member.
