The scrimmage against Cross Plains showed the potential for the 2009 Armadillos.

The Buffalos got the ball first and the front seven of the San Saba defense stopped everything that came at them. The pass defense allowed one big play for a touchdown when the receiver got behind the defender. Team pursuit was very good throughout the scrimmage.

The Armadillo took over and moved the ball very well. A 70-yd run by Gary Gant was called back but San Saba scored later on a 49-yd run by Jack Whitten. The Armadillo running game amassed over 250 yards during the night. Hayden Oliver had over 100 yards, Whitten added over 80, Gant had 70 and Ryan Pannell had 1 run for 14 yards.

Pannell and Whitten split time at the quarterback spot completing passes to six different receivers for a total of 125 yards.

The final tally showed 4 scores by San Saba with 3 others called back on penalties.

The teams played a timed quarter. San Saba moved the ball well but were unable to put the ball in the end zone. Cross Plains had a good drive but the Dillo defense stopped them inside the 20. The only score came on a 36-yd field goal by Diego Gonzalez late in the timed period.

After the scrimmage was over, Coach Pannell had these comments, “I am proud of these kids. They moved the ball better this week. I was pleased with their intensity and how physical they played. Three areas hurt the team, however, that we need to work on, penalties, blown assignments and poor demeanor after bad things.”

San Saba opens the season at Rogan Field against the DeLeon Bearcats on Friday night. Come out and support them as they drive for the playoffs.
