Traditional Drill Team Dance: The Can-Can
Thursday, August 27, 2009 • Posted August 27, 2009

Traditionally, the Dilloettes dance the Can-Can on homecoming as well as other times of the year. The Can-Can is a high kick routine choreographed in the 1960's probably by Denard Hayden for the Haden Drill Team Camp in Nacogdoches, and taught by Hayden and Gussie Nell Davis, creator of the Kilgore Rangerettes. The routine has evolved over the years somewhat, but has retained its characteristic steps alumni recognize and look forward to seeing each passing year.

When the Dilloettes dance the Can-Can anything can happen and often does. From boots flying into the air to feet flying out from under them to adrenalin running high and causing higher kicks and torn ligaments, all Dilloettes recall their experiences with the Can-Can.

On September 4th and 5th, if you attend the pep rally or football game you will have the opportunity to see Dilloette alumni dance the Can-Can again. Alumni have been working on it for about a month and although some kicks may not be as high as they once were, you will recognize the characteristic dance steps. Alumni would like to thank Kyla Byrd Duncan for revising the dance especially for them.
