Girls Just Want To Have Fun
Thursday, August 27, 2009 • Posted August 27, 2009

The Red Hatters and a random group of other exuberant San Saba ladies were welcomed to Ann McElroy’s playhouse near Harmony Ridge to celebrate the end of summer. Twenty three ladies attended the event which began with a gourmet-quality potluck buffet. How, you might wonder, did these ladies learn to cook so well? One of our math oriented guests suggested that each of these women has likely cooked more than 25,000 meals for their families—it’s no wonder they delivered such a plethora of fresh, colorful, healthy, fun food to the banquet table.

After the meal, karaoke began with an energetic rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s smash hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” The group sang in the same girlie way Cyndi sang while Trish Warren, Pat Belk and Ann McElroy displayed some dance moves that haven’t been seen in decades!

Many of the guests stayed throughout the afternoon and treated themselves to a variety of recreational activities. Five ladies swam in the refreshing pool overlooking the Colorado River, three chose to fish from the pier, several played cards and the rest relaxed by the pool or visited with friends.

Most of these ladies spent their summer entertaining friends or other family members and many were involved in community service activities. Several are active in the Friends of the Library, including Betty Wilson who presented a delightful, tongue-twisting program during the summer reading series. Most are involved in their churches and assisted with Vacation Bible School programs, several provided meals for students seeking their EMS certification and some assisted with Meals on Wheels. Yep, these ladies took a page from the lyrics of the Cyndi Lauper hit and have done their best to “live their life right.”

Ladies attending the celebration included Zolly Jones, B. B. Bagley, Trish Warren, Trish Williams Fullerton, Pat Belk, Margie Osborn, Carol Littlefield, Suzanne Walters, Jymmie Linzey, Wanda Davenport, Barbara Porter, Merlane Poole, Ann McElroy, Imogene Hawkins, Shirley Dickinson, Marilyn Miller, Betty Wilson, Faye Currie, Frances Harrington, Charlene Huffstetler and Nelda Edgmon.

The next meeting of the Red Hatters and their friends will be on September 23rd at Alfredo’s Restaurant in Lampasas. If you’re interested in attending, please call Carol Littlefield at 372-3883.
