San Saba's National Night Out offered abundance of information and activities

On Saturday, August 8th, Smokey Bear celebrated his 65th Birthday at San Saba’s National Night Out at the San Saba Civic Center parking lot. Mr. McGruff came to help celebrate and they greeted everyone, posed for pictures and enjoyed hot dogs and birthday cake.

Tony Guidroz, City of San Saba Tourism/Development, helped organize the event and emceed the event.

Aileen and Buddy Roberts performed a one act play entitled “Texas Women and the Civil War.” Gene and Levada Triesch gave a vocal performance of traditional bluegrass and southern gospel music.

Missy King, Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, had a display that gave important information that included glasses that a participant like Gabe Young, son of Adella Young, put on that simulated being under the influence of alcohol. Three year old Cadence Galindo enjoyed a “ride” on the stretcher.

Brenda Willis, of The Sheriff's Department, handed out “a bag of goodies” to Hannah Devora, daughter of Priscilla Devora, and other children.

Sheriff Allen Brown demonstrated the equipment in Sheriff Department vehicles and clothing and accessories used by deputies. Margaret Carlisle was one of the volunteers who participated along with others who sat in the squad car and learned about law enforcement.

Georgia Harris, of the Dove Project, assisted by Adella Young and daughter, handed out pamphlets and had games for people.

City Police Officer, Misty Maldonado was accompanied to the event by Bo, a chocolate labrador who is in training for narcotics detection.

The vehicles of the San Saba County Volunteer Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, and San Saba County Volunteer EMS were available for viewing.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife’s “Operation Game Thief Wall of Shame” was on exhibit. Game Wardens Brad Reeves and Chris Wilson are ready to enforce the law and will not tolerate illegal hunting or fishing.

During Smokey Bear’s interview regarding his “senior citizen” status, he stated he will never retire because of the important message he brings; He wants YOU to stop forest fires!
