About 15 enthusiastic, aspiring golfers attended the Junior Golf Clinic at the San Saba Golf Course June 30-July 2. Most of the participants were from San Saba although two were from Goldthwaite and one was from Austin.

The clinic was led by Coach Schulze and Keith Harris, San Saba’s Golf Pro. Mrs. Mindy, the snow cone lady and Coach Schulze’s daughter, assisted with the event. The clinic met from 9 am – 12 noon each morning.

The golfers received instruction in using woods, irons, chipping and putting. Coach Schulze emphasized the importance of developing a good swing and each participant received individual attention from both instructors. In addition to learning about golf, the clinic offered students an excellent opportunity to learn about sportsmanship, perseverance and frustration—something anyone who’s ever played golf has experienced!

The kids made great progress. Several of the students had little or no experience with golf and they left understanding the basics of a good drive, the challenges of chipping and the importance of putting.

The clinic concluded with a driving, chipping and putting contest. Winners received ribbons and Mrs. Mindy also gave each participant a coupon for a free snow cone.

One of the major highlights of the clinic occurred when Risien Shahan, son of Monica and Kevin Shahan, sank a chip shot from about 40 feet. Who knows——we may see Risien winning a green jacket in Augusta one day!
