First Annual Survivor Luncheon held at San Saba Senior Center

The first annual Survivor Luncheon co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the San Saba Senior Center was held Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Center in honor of National Cancer Survivor’s Day, Sunday June 7, 2009 The attendees included Kaye Clancey, Babe Edwards, Amanda Jackson Nadine Maultsby, Marjorie Mc Dowell, Bill White, and Charles Benskins The salad luncheon menu consisted of Fajita Chicken Salad, Artichoke-Potato Salad, Carrot-Pineapple Salad, Tossed Salad, Minted Melon Balls in a watermelon basket and a variety of crudités. The desserts included Strawberry-Lemon Trifle, pecan pie, cherry pie, brownies and peach cobbler. Pat Belk, provided a beautifully sung Lord’s Prayer as the invocation and later a very uplifting, song “Isn’t It Wonderful.” Each attendee received a gift bag and a special gift as well as flowers. A special thank you to everyone who helped make the luncheon a success, Una Mae Hyatt, Laura Woollen, Gene Dufner, Louise Oswald, Paul and Betty Wilson, Jocelyn McRorey, Pat Belk, Morgan Mixon and the Oliver Pecan Company. “This was a special time to honor those who have survived cancer. We hope to continue this each year as a celebration of life,” said Linda Mixon, Senior Center Director. Laura Woollen, with the American Cancer Society, spoke about the research and the many advances in treatments in all areas. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, whether it was yesterday or 30 years ago, you are recognized and celebrated as a cancer survivor.
