SSISD Board of Trustees met for regular meeting June 8th

The Board of Trustees of the San Saba ISD met for a regular meeting on June 8th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker declared a quorum and called the meeting to order followed by an invocation and everyone joined in the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

Marcie Maxcey, Kim Kirk and Michael Deans were sworn in as newly elected members and gave the oath of office. The Board reorganized by selecting the following officers: President, Darrin Barker; Vice President, Marcie Maxcey; Secretary, Kim Kirk.

Superintendant Leigh Ann Glaze presented the following communications:

1. Enrollment report of HS197; MS 213; Ele. 272; total enrollment at the close of school was 682. During the school year, 771 students were enrolled.

2. Announced that the next Board meeting will be Thursday July 16, 4 p.m.

3. Gave a list of administrative start dates and transition salary.

4. A list of summer maintenance was distributed. Gyms will be closed the month of July for redoing floors.

5. Target 3 Grant is in the process of being applied for which will include Ballinger, Mason and San Saba.

6. All paper work is complete for the three newly elected board members to attend the TASB Convention in San Antonio.

7. Gave a review of some of the Legislative updates. The Board approved the following Consent Agenda:

A. Regular minutes and Executive Session minutes from May 11,2009.

B. Amendments to 2008-2009 budget.

C. Pay bills.

D. Financial Report.

E. Student transfers for 2009-2010 school year - some reapplying.

Assistant Superintendent Ashley Stewart gave an extensive report and handouts for Tests, Scores, CSCOPE curriculum report and accountability with percentage passing rate for local and state comparisons from prior years. This years results are higher than in the past.

San Saba High School Principal Mr. Stewart reported that Summer School began today; painting is in progress; and he is getting acquainted with everything.

San Saba Elementary Principal Shackelford reported some staff changes; office getting painted; Summer School began today, getting organized, planning, and studying the new CSCOPE.

Athletic Director Pannell reported that he moved his office and getting it in shape; the Strength & Conditioning Camp is in progress; Physicals will be Wednesday July 29; gave an informal request for the need of training services and gave information to Superintendent Glaze for the Board to consider including 3 insurance quotes, cost, and etc.

Superintendent Glaze gave a report from Michael Bohensky, Middle School Principal, that included: 20 students in Summer School that started today; Retests will be after Summer School preparation; going over CSCOPE curriculum; setting up a meeting with cheerleaders & parents; getting acquainted with everything.

Randy Henderson, San Saba County Tax Appraiser gave information regarding projected amounts from property tax. In comparison of some other districts that are “in the red”, San Saba County is “in the black”; and expect an increase again this year.

New business included the following action:

a. Set a budget workshop for 6 p.m. on July 15th.

b. In the process of selecting a Facility Committee of 40 members who will tour SSISD properties and access needs and problems in structures. The tours are scheduled for June 25 & 26 at 5:30 p.m. and meet to report on findings on July 13 & 14 at 5:30 p.m.

c. Second reading of TASB Policy Update 85.

d. First reading for Local Policy DEC (local); leaves and absences.

e. Approved expedited waiver request for bus evacuation training waiver.

Alton Tinney, Transportation Director, presented a chart showing some changes in bus routes and policies that will save the district time and money. This past school year 112 students rode buses regularly.

President Barker adjorned the meeting with a short break before an Executive Session. Attending the meeting were: Ashley Stewart, Assistant Superintendent; Superintendent, Leigh Ann Glaze; President, Darrin Barker; Vice President, Marcie Maxcey; Secretary, Kim Kirk; Board members Michael Deans, Bob Whitten, Angela Johnson, Suzy Nettleship; Principals Stewart and Shackelford; Randy Henderson, San Saba County Tax Appraiser; Athletic Director Pennell; Alton Tinney, Transportation Director; Jackie Dyer, Secretary to the Superintendent and Alice Smith, News Reporter.

During the Executive Session the Board hired 4 teachers: Drew Escamilla, Special Ed and Coach; Brenda Roberds, HS Science; Alesha Rogers, Family Consumer Science; Shaina Hyatt, Ag. Science. The Board regretfully accepted the resignation of Emily Andrews, and will need to hire an Assistant Band Director and Elementary Music teacher.
