In the past week we have all been inundated with information regarding the swine flu; however, if you do not have children in school, you probably do not know what SSISD has done to protect the children, staff and potentially the community against this health alert.

Currently on the SSISD website, interested parties can find a flyer that went home to parents and that was provided to the staff and students. This flyer, provides guidance about how to protect us all from the spread of the flu and flu like symptoms. Our school nurse, Maria Cisneroz, has done an incredible job presenting information to each campus regarding the steps to take to keep the spread of the flu at bay. Additionally, our custodians and maintenance staff have worked hard as usually, to clean the school daily taking extra precautions with their efforts and cleaning products. Nurse Cisneroz has also closely monitored those students who have become ill, demonstrated flu like symptoms and also any student or staff member who traveled to Mexico recently.

The website also provides a convenient link to the Centers for Disease Control for easy access and updates. The Texas Education Agency and the UIL have each released guidance that we are following to provide further protection. As an extra precaution, we have canceled field trips, athletic play is suspended until May 11, and large gatherings have been kept at a minimum. For those students and campuses where field trips have been cancelled, please know the campus principals and staff are working hard to determine an alternate activity if and when possible and events will be rescheduled when possible. Currently, at the TEA website reports 799 campuses closed across the state and 476,631 school children are out of school.

If you have any other question about our efforts to keep our students and staff safe or the rescheduling of activities, please do not hesitate to give me a call or the campus where your child attends school. Thanks for your continued support and be safe!
