The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met April 23, 2009 for Play Day with the following members present: Sandee Hartley, Jo Ann Snow, Hattie Rogers, Becky Hardin, Dorothy Sterner, Jo Anne Hardy, Bobbie Churchill, and Anita Miles.
The Chair for April, Jo Ann Snow, calling for a game of counting the holes that begin with the letters T and F less half your handicap. First Place went to Becky Hardin, Second Place to Anita Miles, and Third Place to Sandee Hartley. We had three ladies that scored a birdie, Sandee, Dorothy, and Becky and Anita chipped in to win the chip in pot. Sandee had the Low Gross and Low Net for the day. Pat Ribb joined the ladies for lunch.
Before play the President, Anita Miles, called for a special call meeting. At this time, we do not have enough enteries for the Spring Pecan Classic, due to a conflict with Bosque Valley. It was voted unanimously to cancel the tournament. Hattie Rogers reported we made almost $900 on the consession stand during the Four Person Tournament on April 18 & 19, 2009. The ladies voted to open the concession stand at the August Three Person Tournament. Anita read a thank you letter from Betty Sue Low’s daughter who we sponsored in the Cancer Relay for Life. Anita also gave a report from the Golf Advisory Board for the City of San Saba. The first order of business at the meeting was the election of Buddy Adams as Chairman and Anita Miles being elected as the Vice Chair. Other board members present were Larry Hardin, Rick Baskin, Jerry Minter, and Keith Harris, the club pro. Stan Weik, City Manager, and Tony Guodroz, Tourist Director, met with the Board and presented their vision for the San Saba River Golf Course. The city has already made giant steps in improving and beautifying the course. They reported the new driving range will be completed soon and there are prospects for a new putting area. There are future plans for the ponds to all join for conservation and preservation purposes and that would enhance the course. Richard Smith was present and displayed the new signs as the board has voted to change the numbering of the holes. This had been an ongoing issue with the course. For good reasons the holes were changed but it was not satisfactory and now we will go back to the orginal plan that the new nine will be the front nine and you will once again be finishing on the beautiful hole coming into the club house. The Board welcomes all comments from the Golf Membership as we are serving and representing all members. We will be making plans for a Membership Meeting and Supper and Golf Fun. This will be announced soon.
We are so proud of all the San Saba High School golf girls! District Winners! They were third at Regional! These girls make us old lady golfers proud of their accomplishments! And the icing on the cake, was Shelby Hardy tied for first place medalist and lost in a play off but will be going to State and I am counting on Shelby!
And they learned to play golf at the beautiful San Saba River Golf Course and so can you! We will be having a membership drive soon and we encourage you to try this sport that has no age requirements or skill requirements. It is just a joyful experience and you will love fun in the sun and “swinging!”
