Kids are absolutely amazing! Let them set a goal, support them and watch them go! What seemed to be a near impossible project is now closer to a reality. In the fall, Colleen Womack and the students of her BCIS II class started a project. The class project was to identify a problem in the school, design a plan to solve the problem and then to take action. From the beginning, the project has belonged to the students; they have done the paperwork, the public speaking at the Rotary Club, to campus clubs, to the booster club, and finally, at the May School Board meeting. With each speaking event, the students clearly lined out their thoughts and their plan of action. I know you have seen the ads and the pictures in the paper and soon you will see the final product - the inflatable tunnel and helmet! The students are nearing their goal of raising $8000!

The problem the students identified was how do we motivate the citizens of San Saba and the San Saba ISD student body? How do we improve our school and community spirit? They determined that something grand should be done! The students were determined to purchase an inflatable helmet and tunnel that could be used by multiple campuses and at multiple school events. The tunnel can be separated from the helmet so that any school group can use it for their function. The students had a large goal to reach. To purchase the helmet and tunnel the students had to raise over $8000. This is not an easy feat, but their hard work at hamburger sales, pennies drives, and as carhops is getting close to paying off. Additionally, they got the student body and the teaching staff involved through various motivational fundraising schemes. The San Saba High School Alumni Association assisted the students by providing a mail out to the SSHS alumni, the youth basketball league kicked in some as did many organizations on campus and throughout San Saba to help make this possible. What is the most important thing, though, is the life lesson learned by these students and the level of commitment demonstrated by these kiddos to do something for their school and community. We are so fortunate to have leaders in our school who will step up, set a goal and go after it. Thanks to all of you who have helped the students reach their goal!!! We expect to see you all at Rogan Field this fall to support our Armadillos and as the students unveil their new purchase!
