Truck accident blocks U.S. Hwy. 190 Bridge
Thursday, April 23, 2009 • Posted April 23, 2009

The Colorado River Bridge on U.S. Highway 190 East was the scene of a fiery crash early this past Tuesday morning. According to DPS Trooper Monte Carroll, at approximately 12:45 a.m., a tractor- trailer owned by PFG, LLC, of Temple was traveling west on U.S. Highway 190. The driver first noticed smoke coming out of the vents inside the cab. When the smoke turned into flames, the driver attempted to steer his fully loaded rig to the shoulder of the road. The truck's right front tire caught the curb of the bridge and skidded along it until the truck eventually hit the guardrail and came to a stop. The driver jumped out of the truck and called 911. He received no injuries.

The truck and trailer were engulfed in fire when the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene. Due to diesel fuel and spoiled food in the trailer, the accident was treated as a Hazardous Material Scene. Bridge engineers from Austin TxDOT were contacted to check the integrity of the bridge.

Emergency personnel responding to the accident included: DPS Troopers Monte Carroll and Mark Owens, San Saba County Sheriff's Department, San Saba County Volunteer Fire Department, San Saba County Volunteer EMS, City of San Saba Police Department, and Lometa Fire Department.
