April 19, 1984

Mike McKinnerney, 13, killed a 20 pound turkey on opening day of the season. The Tom's beard was 8" long. Mike killed the turkey with a 22 magnum after his father, Dale called the bird up with a turkey call. He has been hunting for years but this is the largest bird he's ever brought down.

The Spenco 500 Cyclists Race will begin at 9:00 a.m. in Waco and will wind 500 miles along Central Texas Highways and through the Hill Country. The contestants will pass through San Saba on Friday, April 20th. More than $50,000 in prize money is at stake in the competition.

Archaeologists have discovered that people wore wool at least 12,000 years ago.

Mrs. Jeannie Miley of San Angelo will address the April meeting of the Fellowship of Christian Women.

Jeannie is the author of "Spread Wide the Curtain" and writes a weekly self-help article for the San Angelo Standard Times.

April 13, 1964

San Saba County wool and lamb producers received checks in the mail last week for incentive payments, totaling $45,155.82.

Dan H. Kuykendall of Memphis, Tenn., son of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Kuykendall of Cherokee has announced as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate, representing the state of Tennessee.

A small dog belonging to the Lemons family of Bend was found acting strangely last week and was found to have rabies. The entire Lemons family will be taking the series of shots which will total 70 shots.

A late frost in the county Thursday morning, April 9, killed early garden plans in some areas of the county.

Payments totaling $74,139 will be shared by 192 San Saba county producers this fall if they fulfill all requirements in diverting the feed grain acreage they have indicated.

April 22, 1954

Gates at the City's Millpond Lake were closed last week for the first time in several years as the City Council started putting into operation its announced plan of restoring the lake as a fishing and recreation center for people of this area.

Today will be a big cattle shipping day in San Saba County as a special two unit train is scheduled to load 3500 head of cattle at Richland Springs and San Saba from the Owen Bros. pastures on lands owned and leased by Bill and Kelly Owen near Mobridge, So. Dakota.

Metal-Smith 2c John Harkey, phoned home Sunday night from California to let his parents know that he had arrived from Guam and that he planned to start home on Tuesday, after receiving his discharge, April 27. Harkey has been overseas almost four years.

At the Movies - "Ma and Pa Kettle at Home" starring Marjorie Main & Percy Kilbride..."Pack Train" starring Gene Autry and "Lone Star" with Clark Gable and Ava Gardner.
