Health Education and Screenings at San Saba Senior Center
Thursday, April 16, 2009 • Posted April 16, 2009

Many of the programs offered at the San Saba Multi-Service Senior Center focus on information that enhances health and wellness. We provide many opportunities that encourage healthy lifestyle choices through nutrition education and preventative care.

Health Screenings

Having regular health evaluations is important to everyone, but even more so for older adults. Health screenings are offered free of charge at the Center on a regular basis which include blood pressure and hearing screenings.

Linda Watson and Angela Davis from Mid-Tex Hearing visit the Center on the first and third Tuesdays of each month to provide hearing screenings, evaluations, recommendations, and maintenance on existing products. Sandy McHorse RN with Guardian/Velita Home Health Care offer blood pressure screenings on the first Wednesday of each month. In addition, a Foot Care Clinic is provided by Jamie Moseley, LVN, also with Guardian/Velita Home Health Care, on the first Thursday of the month.

Nutrition Education

Carolyn McDowell, County Extension Agent-FCS San Saba County is part of the Center's ongoing nutrition education. Her new class "Cooking with Carolyn" is a wonderful addition to our program. She presents recipes that are easy to prepare, require a few simple ingredients and yet provide a solid, nutritional boost to any diet.

Living Well Seminars

We are also presenting a new series of educational seminars on health-related topics that will cover a wide range of subjects emphasizing wellness and disease prevention.

The first in the series will deal with stroke prevention. Learn about the brain and carotid artery disease, warning signs of a stroke, risk factors for this type of vascular disease, current diagnostic testing and treatment options.
