The San Saba Tennis Team played in the Region V 2A & Under State Team Tennis Tournament on March 6-7. The tennis team came in second place and this qualifies them for the state team tennis tournament on March 13-14 in Round Rock.

In the regional quarterfinal match San Saba defeated Lago Vista 16 to 3. In the semifinal match San Saba defeated Florence 14 to 5. In the finals the Armadillos ran into a mostly senior team from Brock. Brock won 16 to 3.

San Saba then had to play a playback match for second with Godley who came in third place. Since Godley and San Saba had not played each other in the tournament a playback match for second was necessary.

The Armadillos jumped out in front by a score of 7 to 1 to take an early lead but Godley came back winning several 3 set tie-breakers and the next 6 of 8 matches went Godley’s way. This cut the lead to 9 to 7 in favor of San Saba. The armadillos won 2 of the next 3 matches, and all went to a 3 set tie-breaker. The Armadillos won the the match 11 to 8. The tennis team really played hard and fought to the end in all four matches.

We were the youngest team there and they really played well. I am very proud of this team for the way they played and they never gave up. This is the youngest team I have ever taken to the state tournament and for them to make it 13 years in a row is a great honor to them.

This is the 13th straight year the tennis team has gone to the State Tournament in team tennis. It is also the 17th time San Saba has gone to the State Tournament since team tennis started in 1982. Playing for San Saba this year are Tayler Hibler, Ariela De Giula, Tara Crosby, Nicole Sears, Lauren Dawson, Regan Hartranft, Brittany Moreno, Kelli Cox, Haylee Oliver, Kristen Jordan, Courtney Pryor, Chase Key, Diego Gonzales, Kobe Cisneroz, Reid Casco, Marshall McIntosh, Houston Casco, Josh Raiford, Jose Vega, Alex Rangel, Ryan Plumbley, B.J. Harbour, D.J. McKinney, Luke Cox, Jonathan Ramirez, Romero Franco, and Chase Pierce.

The state tournament will be played in the Round Rock area over 8 different sites. There will be 16 teams at the state tournament. San Saba will play 4 teams over a period of two days. Times are 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday. We will not know who we play or the location until Thursday night after the coaches meeting.
