The San Saba Tennis Team played in two tournaments this past week. Some players played in the Fredericksburg JV Tournament on Thursday, February 19th and then another group played in the Copperas Cove Varsity Tournament on Friday, February 20th.

The Copperas Cove tournament was probably one of the toughest tournaments we will play in all year. There were 23 schools playing in the tournament and most of the schools were 5A or 4A, with some 3A , San Saba was the smallest school playing in the tournament. The 23 schools were Austin Westwood, Copperas Cove, Round Rock McNeil, San Saba, Lampasas, Leander Vista Ridge, Killeen Ellison, Gatesville,Waco High, Hutto, Cedar Park, Killeen Shoemaker, Brownwood, Pflugerville Hendrickson, Harker Heights, Del Valle, Temple, Killeen High, Round Rock, Pflugerville Connally, Marble Falls, Faith Hill Academy and Llano.

Playing in the Copperas Cove tournament were Tayler Hibler, Lauren Dawson, Ariela De Giuli, Regan Hartranft, Marshall McIntosh, Diego Gonzales, Reid Casco, Houston Casco, and Josh Raiford. Our kids competed very well with Tayler Hibler winning second place in A Girls Singles, Lauren Dawson won 7th place in B Girls Singles , Ariela De Giuli and Regan Hartranft came in 8th place in B Girls Doubles. Diego Gonzales and Reid Casco lost in the consolation finals in A Boys Doubles .

In the Fredericksburg JV Tournament there were 19 schools playing. The schools were Bandera, Centerpoint Dripping Springs, Floresville, Fredericksburg, Hondo, Ingram Kerrville, Liberty Hill, Llano, Faith Academy, Mason, Medina, Menard, San Saba, Smithson Valley, Utopia, Uvalde, and Wimberly. Playing for San Saba were Jonathan Ramirez, Chase Pierce, Bianca Dawson, Ryan Plumley, Alex Rangel, Kristen Jordan, Courtney Pryor, D.J. McKinney, B.J. Harbour and Jose Vega. Harbour and Vega quarterfinalist in B Boys Doubles.

The next three weeks the tennis team will concentrate on team tennis. San Saba will play Florence on Friday, February 27th in Florence at 8:00 a.m. On Saturday February 28th the tennis team will travel to Leander High School and play Bellville at 11:30 a.m. and then play Waco Robinson at 2:30 p.m. Hopefully these matches will get us ready for the regional team tennis tournament on March 6-7th. The top two teams will advance to the state team tennis tournament on March 13-14th. San Saba has advanced to the state tournament 16 times and the past twelve years in a row.
