A Blast from the Past!

Pictured here is the first San Saba Lady Dillos to win District. It was the team of 1957. San Saba only began basketball in 1953 and it was half court, women are the weaker sex. My, how things have changed. This team faced Gatesville for Bi-District in Lampasas, Texas. Most of this information is from my sister, Jackie Owen Maxcey, who was on that infamous team. She relates how the girls they faced were huge and she was a 5' 2" guard, at most, and was terrified. But right off she stole the ball from the girl and she said that was the only thing she did and the rest was history. They were drummed! Jackie did recall that she got All District and All Tournament in two tournaments and Judy Patterson Cambell relates that she was honorable mention All District.

Pictured are: Top Row: Coach Hoyt Browning, Estelle Millican, Martha Terry, Suzy Gray, and the manager, Eleanor Owen.

Second Row: Wanda Sedberry, Rawnie Sue Maxcey, Margie Fitzgerald, Ruth Timberlake, and Barbara Owen.

Third Row: Patsy Clark, Mary Farr, Janet Harris, Judy Patterson, Chris Nance, Jackie Owen, and Janie Lackey Sloski.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LADY DILLOS OF 2009 FOR THEIR DISTRICT WIN!

They have been a joy to watch and I don’t think we’ve seen nothing yet! These girls have talent, attitude, desire, and a great spirit. I am so proud of them, as we all are here in San Saba, Texas!

Now on a nostalgic note: Barbara Owen Gilger was a member of that first winning team in 1957 and now 52 years later her granddaughter, Johnna Reavis, is on our winning 2009 District team! It just doesn’t get any better than that!

GO LADY DILLOS!!!!
