We have been fortunate to have unseasonably warm weather, but February, March and even early April could bring us some winter storms. What does the school do in case of bad weather and how do the parents and students get notified of school cancellations or late starts? Basically, the type of bad weather event determines the district’s response. If at all possible, in the event of bad weather, the District’s first choice is a late start rather than school cancellation.

Although, the school calendar does have inclement weather days, built in, it is always best to have students in school if at all possible. With that said, the District’s primary concern during a bad weather event is student safety. Please know that the decision whether to have a late start or a cancellation is based solely on student and staff safety.

In the event of a late start or cancellation, notification to parents and students will come in several forms: the District will announce by 6:00 a.m. the status of school. Notification will be made through the following radio stations: KBAL at 106.1 FM in San Saba, KOXE 101.3 FM or KBWD AM at 1380 in Brownwood. Television stations carrying the notice are KWTX Channel 10 in Waco and KCEN Channel 6 in Killeen. Furthermore, the District website will be updated as soon as possible to provide the most accurate information regarding school closings or late starts.

Parents, if you happen to forget this information in the coming weeks, just pull out your San Saba ISD Student Handbook and the information is listed on the reverse side of the school calendar that is printed in the handbook. Better yet, find your handbook and pull out that page and put it on the refrigerator for future reference.

Last week, I spoke to you about the school calendar for 2008 – 2009; please remember that the final calendar adoption will be at the February 11 regular monthly meeting.
