The San Saba Lady Dillos made history last Friday night as they captured the District Championship by downing Comanche, 59-49.

We started off a bit slowly and were tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter. We scored eighteen points in the second quarter and took a 30-22 lead in at halftime. We played really well for six minutes of the third quarter and were up twenty at one point but we didn’t finish the quarter very well and were only up ten at the end of this stanza, 49-39. We held on and won 59-49.

Shelby Hardy had a big night scoring 27 points followed by Katy Davis with 8, Haylee Oliver and Calea Turner with 7, Tarah Crosby with 4, and Nicole Sears and Bianca Zepeda with 3. Probably the thing that stands out most in this game was our screening on offense. I was very pleased with how we set screens for each other which lead to wide open looks.

Well, we accomplished one of our major goals which was a District Championship. I don’t know if San Saba has ever won a District Championship in Girls Basketball. The only banner we have hanging in Armadillo Arena concerning girls’ basketball has them being District Runner-Up in 2000-01.

I’m so proud of our team. Everyone of them has contributed in some way this year to help us get a win whether it was due to scoring, rebounding, playing defense, giving us looks in practice, going hard in practice, playing hard on scout team, whatever, it has taken everyone of them for this accomplishment to happen and I couldn’t be happier for this outstanding group of young ladies.

I’m especially proud for our seniors. We have scratched, clawed, sweated, cried and worked our tails off for a District Championship and a trip to the playoffs. No one has any idea the effort that these three and our TEAM has put in to achieve a dream. We’re looking forward to the playoffs and we want our great fans to come enjoy the ride with us. Our team members for 2008-09 are Calea Turner, Shelby Hardy, Katy Davis, Nicole Sears, Johna Reavis, Haylee Oliver, Danessa Vasquez, Bianca Zepeda, Tarah Crosby, Jaena Edwards, Bekah Bush, and Ashley Pruitt.

We will not know whom our opponent will be when the paper comes out due to Merkel and Cisco still battling it out for second and third within their district. We will play the winner of the third place team (District 5) vs Nocona. We will have a warm up game on Monday at Florence versus Thorndale and it will be at 6:30 p.m.

Most likely our first playoff game will hopefully be on Friday, Feb. 20th but that still has not been determined. As soon as we find out I will print it in the paper and let the radio know. Phil 4:13.
