Pierian Study Club holds March meeting
Thursday, March 21, 2013 • Posted March 20, 2013

The Pierian Study Club met for their monthly meeting at the San Saba High School Cafetorium on March 7th for the annual UIL One Act Play performance. Anita Miles, President, called the meeting to order, and then welcomed club members; San Saba High School English teacher and drama coach, Mrs. Elizabeth Chambers; and members of the cast and crew of the one act play.

The brief business meeting included Loy Nell Behrens, Projects Committee Chair, reporting that a suggestion had been made by her committee that a bake sale be held on March 28th on the deck of Alamo Pecan to raise additional money for the scholarship fund. It was agreed by the membership that the bake sale be held on that date with members being given the choice of either baking goods for the sale or making a monetary donation. President Miles also announced that the upcoming First Baptist Church’s performance of The Jerusalem Encounter would be presented Palm Sunday, March 24th, with two performances at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., not on Easter Sunday as erroneously announced at the February meeting.Sharon Clawson, Yearbook Chair, then introduced Mrs. Chambers and the cast and crew of this year’s UIL One Act Play with Jenna Sloan, senior cast member, giving a brief welcome to members as well. The ladies then enjoyed a performance of Dan Nigro’s satirical comedy, Cinderella Waltz.

The play revolves around the main character, Rosey Snow, who, as stated in the play’s synopsis, is a young woman “…trapped in a fairy tale world, that is as funny as it is a little frightening. The synopsis continues by stating that the “…play investigates the archetypal origins of the world’s most popular fairy tale, contrasting the familiar and charming Perrault version with the darker, more ancient and disturbing tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm.

Cast includes Jenna Sloan, Jantzen Bell, Allison Christian, Allison Nettleship, Meredith Meador, Josh Cazares, Seth Lackey, Karlee Cromer, and Donovan Alcorn. Members of the crew include Nathan Amstead, Hailey Osbourn, Kayla Kutin, Alexa Maxcey, Ashia Chambers, Emily Esquivel, Riana Bass, Logan Guidroz, and Madeleine Nettleship.

The One Act Play cast and crew, as well as study club members, were then served by Executive Committee Co-Hostesses, Loy Nell Behrens, Gail Bruner, Sharon Clawson, Sandy Smith, Rebecca Whitley, Patricia Warren, Louise Williams, and Kathleen Hawkins, Chair. The serving tables were decorated with a thespian-inspired theme of balloon arrangements, confetti, plates and cups. Pastel-colored tablecloths and an exquisite cut-glass serving bowl also adorned the tables. The refreshment buffet included a variety of finger sandwiches, petit cupcakes and crackers, assorted fresh fruit and vegetable trays, candied pecans, lemon squares, and chocolate-dipped cookies with red punch and iced water as a choice of beverage.

Prior to the close of the meeting, Mrs. Clawson once again thanked Mrs. Chambers and her cast and crew for their entertaining production and hard work. Mrs. Clawson then announced that the next meeting of the Pierian Study Club would be held April 11th in the home of Martha Leigh Whitten. Hostesses for the meeting will be Paula Barrier, Jeri Jones, Jocelyn McRorey, Nicole Bagley, Sandy Smith, and Patty Shaw, Chair.
