The San Saba Tennis Team played in the State 2A & Under Team Tournament on March 8-9 in the Round Rock-Leander-Georgetown area.

Teams in the State Tournament were East Bernard, Wall, Godley, Brownfield, Schulen-burg, Mason, San Saba, Brock, Ingram, Franklin, Kirbyville, Knippa, Wink, Reagan County, White Oak, and Forsan.

The Dillos played a tough team from Kirbyville in the first round. After the doubles the Dillos were ahead 4 to 3. Then the drizzle came in and the courts were too wet to play on. After an eight hour rain delay the singles matches finally started. We never could get the momentum back that we had in the doubles matches. Kirbyville came out and won 7 of the first 10 singles matches to take a 10 to 7 win over the Armadillos. After the match the Dillos had to turn around and play Schulenburg Friday night. The match got started around 8:00 p.m. Friday night. Since the match started so late the match with Schulenburg was shortened to 9 matches instead of the usual 19 matches. San Saba won all 4 doubles matches but lost all 4 singles matches. This left the mixed doubles match the deciding match. Karlee Cromer and Aaron Krueger were playing the mixed doubles match. The score was tied at 3 to 3 when the light went out. It was 10:00 p.m. and all the Leander Tennis Courts are on timers and the lights go out at 10:00 P.M. We got back to the Hotel at midnight and after a short nights sleep we started up again at 7:30 in the morning. We ended up losing the mixed doubles match 9 to 7 in a very close match. This gave Schulenburg a 5 to 4 win. The Dillos then had to drive from Leander over to Georgetown to take on Forsan. The Dillos won this match 11 to 8. In the Saturday afternoon match we took on Wink. We won this match 12 to 7. The Armadillos came out the tournament ranked 13th. Mason won the state championship over Wall.

I am very proud of our players for the way they played and especially for their fight throughout the tournament. These kids played 8 matches in two days and were on the tennis courts for about 13 hours on Friday and 10 hours on Saturday. They played their hearts out and the two matches we lost could have gone the other way as they were very close matches.

Players playing for San Saba were Joannah Crosby, Joely Haverland, Kristen Isham, Morgan Jimenez, Josie Dawson, Karlee Cromer, Marissa Anaya, Micah Cox, Alex Baker, Gunnar Hibler, Aaron Krueger, J.T. Holland, Jairo Casco, Will Cooley, Kolton Haverland, Reigan Casco and Omar Argote.

We will be hosting a tournament this week on March 12-13. Teams in tournament besides us will be Mason, Brady and Lago Vista.

Don’t forget about the Alumni match on Saturday, March 16 beginning at 9:00 a.m. All former players are invited to come play or just come watch and visit. If you plan to eat lunch at the courts please contact Coach Cox or Cheray Haverland. If you have any questions or need more information call Coach Cox at 325-372-8725.
