Daughters of the Republic of Texas offers essay contest

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, San Saba River Chapter, is participating in the 2009, DRT’s Texas History Awards Contest.

The purpose of this contest is to stimulate interest in the early history of Texas for students in the 4th and 7th grades.

Essay subjects are: 4th grade “Jose Antonio Navarro” and 7th grade “Angel of Goliad”. Winner of the state wide contest will be invited to the DRT convention in Killeen, Texas on May 15, 2009. A cash prize of $300 will be awarded for the winners.

Also offered is the 4th & 7th grade Texas History Teacher Contest. The winner will be invited to the May 2009 convention in Killeen. He or she will be ask to speak at the Historical Evening event and share ideas on teaching techniques while teaching Texas history. The winner will receive dinner for two, a plaque, and a cash prize of $700. His or her school will receive $1000.
