What's Important?
Thursday, March 14, 2013 • Posted March 13, 2013 • Updated March 13, 2013 1:10 PM

I had a garden hoe once and the handle broke in half. I had a car that ran well and then the motor locked up and I had to get another one. I had a candle that I burned and the wick and wax burned up and melted. All of these things were meant to do just that - either break or be used up. They were just not meant to last.

In our world today, we put a great deal of effort into accumulating things that are not going to last forever. It's okay to have these things and use them. But if we think they are eternal, we are very much disappointed.

However, there is something that is eternal. It is not something that you can see, touch or taste. Every person has one...the rich and poor, male and female, you get the picture don't you? What is this that we have? A soul. A soul that will continue to live after this earthly tent is used up.

Paul wrote to the Corinthians and told them, "For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." 2 Corinthians 5:1 (NASB). In verse two and three he said, "For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3 inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked." There is something that awaits the faithful Christian after this life is over. That home with God. And we will be clothed in a different way than we are now.

I want to be there, don't you? But we must be careful how we live our lives on this earth. Jesus said, "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matthew 16:26 (NASB)

Think about this for a moment. What is more important than the spiritual life? What possession could we have or get that would be more important than our soul? I can think of none.

Now, do we live our lives like this? Do we spend time with the spiritual side of our lives to make sure they are being fed? Do we read the word, pray, and worship God with His saints at church? These things are within our power to do. Temporal or eternal - your choice.
