Six members of the San Saba FCCLA chapter spent Tuesday February 5th visiting with members of the Texas Senate and House of Representatives about the impact Career and Technical Education has made on their life. Kristin Reynolds, Mckenzie Hibler, Savanah Rios, Melissa Vega, Gisela Rodriguez and Ana Karen Guerrero along with their advisor, Mrs. Jennifer Walzel, were able to visit with over 30 Senators and Representatives.
The FCCLA members were grouped with members of other CTSO, Career and Technical Student Organizations, in teams of 3 members. Every office in the capital was visited on that day. The students spoke about the impacts taking Career and Technical classes has made on their future. The FCCLA members spent Monday evening training on the etiquette of visiting the capital and speaking with the Senators and Representatives and being updated on bills that could effect Career and Technical Education. The Texas CTSO’s had displays set up at the Rotunda of the capital that highlighted their organization. These displays were left up all week and every Senator and Representative was given an invitation to come and look at the displays.
San Saba FCCLA members visited with the staff member over education from over 30 Representatives and Senators offices. They were very fortunate to speak with a Representative Villalba from District 114 and our own Representative Dr. J.D. Sheffield. Governor Rick Perry even stopped by to talk with the group of CTSO members that morning. These six young ladies have had a great impact on not only their local FCCLA chapter but also on the future of Career and Technical Education in Texas.
