San Saba High School Tennis Report

The San Saba High School Tennis Team had a busy week last week in preparation for the 2A & Under Region V Tournament on March 1-2. On Tuesday, February 19, we took part of our varsity and JV Team to play Llano in team tennis. The Armadillos won the match 9 to 8. Playing against Llano were Joely Haverland, McKayla Eden, Marissa Anaya, Allison Christian, Aaron Krueger, J.T. Holland, Jairo Casco, William Cooley, Drew Daniel, Ashton Krueger, and Jantzen Bell. Winning matches for San Saba in Boys Singles were William Cooley, Ashton Krueger, and Drew Daniel. In Girls Singles Joely Haverland, Marissa Anaya, and Allison Christian won matches. In Boys Doubles William Cooley and Drew Daniel won their match. In Girls Doubles Joely Haverland and McKayla Eden won their match. In Mixed Doubles Joely Haverland and Aaron Krueger won their match.

On Thursday, February 21 we took some varsity and jv player that did not play on Tuesday to the Mason Tournament. Alex Baker and Gunnar Hibler won first place in Boys Doubles by winning 5 matches on the day. They defeated Comfort in the finals 8 – 6. Josie Dawson and Morgan Jimenez won second place in Girls Doubles. They lost to Fredericks-burg in the finals 5 to 8. Kristen Isham was a quarterfinalist in Girls Singles. Other players playing in the tournament were Reigan Casco, Roy Argote, Omar Argote,Katie Ingram, Amy Sanders, and Erin Sanders.

On Saturday the Armadillos travelled to Leander High School and played Bellville and Waco Robinson. In the morning match we took on the 10th ranked Bellville in class 3A. Bellville was the best team we have played all year. We lost to Bellville by a score of 20 to 2. Winning matches for San Saba were Josie Dawson and Morgan Jimenez in Girls Singles. In the afternoon match we took on the 24th ranked Waco Robinson in class 3A. We lost this match 18 to 4. We had about 8 matches that were close and had chances of winning but were unable to put the match away. These matches will help us next week when we play in the regional team tournament on March 1-2. Playing Saturday for San Saba were Kristen Isham, Morgan Jimenez, Josie Dawson, Karlee Cromer, Marissa Anaya, A.J. Gamboa, Alex Baker, Gunnar Hibler, Aaron Krueger, J.T. Holland, Jairo Casco, Drew Daniel, Omar Argote, and Reigan Casco.

Next week the Armadillo Tennis Team will play in the 2A & Under Regional Team Tennis Tournament on March 1-2. San Saba will be trying to qualify for the state tournament for 17 straight years and 21 times altogether. The top two teams in the region will qualify for the state tournament on March 8-9. Teams playing in this regional tournament are San Saba, Early, Granger, Thrall, Florence, Lago Vista , Johnson City, and Godley. San Saba will play Early in the quarterfinals at 8:30 a.m. at Leander High School. If we win we will play the winner of Granger and Thrall match in the semifinals at 1:30p.m. at Leander High School . Finals, third place matches and possible playback will be played on Saturday.
