Ladies Golf Notes
Thursday, February 21, 2013 • Posted February 20, 2013

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met February 14 for the monthly business meeting with President Anita Miles opening the meeting with prayer. Secretary Jo Ann Hardy did not present the minutes, but they will be heard at the March meeting. Anita Miles, gave the treasurer’s report in the absence of the Treasurer, Hattie Rogers. Jo Ann Snow, Sandee Hartley, and Dorothy Sterner were also present.

The ladies discussed the upcoming traveling 4-Ball that will host in March and made plans. The Chair, Sandee Hartley, reported on the costs and noted that the previous year the fee for participation was $27.00 and it was agreed to keep this rate.

Anita reported on George Rogers. All his tests remain good, to the delight of the ladies, and then mid-morning Hattie joined the ladies for games. Hattie is greatly loved and we have missed her so much, so that was a special treat.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day Anita brought soup and homemade bread and Jo Anne Hardy brought homemade cookies and the other ladies brought Valentine candy, so we celebrated the holiday in a grand way with lunch and games. There was that tie of love and fellowship, which makes this next announcement rather difficult.

On a nostalgic sad note, the ladies have decided to retire the San Saba Ladies Golf Association. There are only five to six active members and they have health issues. We will finish out 2013 with our annual tournament and hosting the traveling 4-ball and we will continue playing as friends rather than organized.

The Ladies Golf Association was formed in 1973 with Waydene Ivy as the first president. Those first years there were many women who supported the golf course, both financially and with participation. But through the years the attendance has slowly dropped and all good things must end!

I personally, am a charter member, along with Jo Anne Hardy and Dorothy Sterner. We all worked hard getting the course going, by sprigging grass on our hands and knees and many other labors of love, to make it happen. We were so proud to have a golf course. Then we added the next nine holes and we became one of the best golf courses in Central Texas with a high rating! We have seen many changes in the course, we are now the San Saba River Golf Course, and we’ve had many great pros through the years. So there are many happy happy memories! And as long as our good Lord allows it, we will keep on ‘swinging!’
