John graduated from Texas Christian University in 1970 and was a lifelong TCU supporter and TCU football enthusiast. He worked at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor for over 30 years, and prior to that he had owned and sold two broker/dealer firms in Fort Worth and Salado. John was actively involved with the community of San Saba and loved spending time there at his river house. John’s family and friends remember him as an avid golfer, a determined poker player, and a man who loved long car trips with his wife and dog, Moon, his brother and sisters, his dear friends, and anyone else he could talk into going. He was the personification of a true friend. Most of all he was so proud of his kids and the adults they grew to be. He was always accompanied by his constant companion - his cell phone - with which he maintained continuous communication with those beloved friends.

John is survived by his wife, Linda Skillern Northern; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Northern; son, William Davis Northern; stepson, Chris Skillern; stepdaughter, Wendy Skillern; stepson, Tim Skillern; sister, Melissa Fuller and husband, Scott Fuller; sister, Patricia McElwrath; brother, Scot Northern and wife, Tanya; nephews, Chris Fuller, Nick Fuller, Mac McElwrath and Sean McElwrath; and numerous extended family and friends.
