Post No. 27 to meet Tuesday evening
Thursday, February 21, 2013 • Posted February 20, 2013

The veterans of the Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 will meet Tuesday, February 26th at the Legion Hall in San Saba for their stated meeting. The building will be opened at 5:30p.m. for fellowship and refreshments. At 6:30p.m. a pot luck meal of Mexican food will be served. Members should bring their favorite Mexican food dish, salad, bread or dessert. Drinks will be provided by the Post. Guests and veterans interested in joining the American Legion are invited.

After the meal, a short business meeting will take place. The post will consider sponsoring a high school senior to attend BoysState in Austin in June. American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each student becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.

Boys State has been a program of the American Legion since 1935. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities, of a franchised citizen. Students will be housed at the University of Texas in Austin and throughout the week they will learn how local and state government functions. Students will form their own city government, enact laws and even pass legislation at the state house at the capitol.
