The San Saba Tennis Team had a busy week last week. On Thursday, the JV Team played in the Llano tournament on Thursday, the Varsity team played in the Llano Varsity tournament on Friday. On Saturday the varsity team travelled to Copperas Cove and Killeen to play team tennis matches against Copperas Cove and Harker Heights.

Teams in the Llano Varsity Tournament were Liberty Hill, Llano, Canyon Lakes, San Saba, Early, Brady, San Antonio Memorial, and San Antonio Edgewood. The tennis team came home with 8 medals. In girls doubles it was an all San Saba finals. Joannah Crosby and Joely Haverland defeated teammates Josie Dawson and Morgan Jimenez in the finals 6 – 3 , 6 – 1. Crosby and Haverland have won both tournaments that they have played in this year. In boys doubles Alex Baker and Gunnar Hibler won first place by defeating Duncan and Nickle from Liberty Hill in the finals 6 – 1, 6 – 3. In mixed doubles Mikayla Eden and Jairo Casco won third place by defeating Paty and Devries from Canyon Lakes 6 – 4, 6 – 3. In girls singles, Kristen Isham won 4th place, and Marissa Anaya lost in the consolation quarterfinals. In boys singles Aaron Krueger lost in the quarterfinals to Speegle of Liberty Hill 6 – 2, 6 – 4, and J. T. Holland lost in the consolation quarterfinals. Will Cooley and Jairo Casco lost in the consolation semifinals.

On Saturday morning the varsity tennis team played Copperas Cove tennis team. San Saba fought hard but lost a close match to the 5A Team 11 to 8. I was very proud of the way we played against Copperas Cove. Copperas Cove has a very good team and the Armadillos fought hard to the end. Five of the 11 matches we lost were very close matches that could have gone either way. Playing in the match were Joannah Crosby, Joely Haverland, Kristen Isham, Morgan Jimenez, Josie Dawson, Marissa Anaya, Micah Cox, A.J. Gamboa, Micah Cox, Alex Baker, Gunnar Hibler, Aaron Krueger, J.T. Holland, Jairo Casco, Drew Daniel and Reigan Casco.

Saturday afternoon the Dillos drove over to Harker Heights to play a very tough 5A team. The courts were wet from the drizzle that started up around 12:00 and we got the doubles started but decided to stop the match after the doubles because we didn’t want someone to get hurt on the slippery courts.

Next week the dillos will go to the Fredericksburg Tournament on Thursday, February 14, and on Friday, February 15 we will go to the Waco Robinson Tournament at the Waco Regional Tennis Center. We will take some varsity and jv players to Fredericksburg and then another group of varsity and jv players to the Waco Tournament.

All alumni remember the alumni match on March 16, more information will come out soon.
