Winners and Losers

It has been tagged as “Super Sunday”. Today the Super Bowl will be played in New Orleans between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. These are the two best teams the NFL has this year; and one of them will be crowned champions, while the other team will go home knowing they got so close but did not get the ring.

There are a couple of thoughts about this that I would like to share with you. First, it is super Sunday. But not because two football teams are playing in the Super Bowl. It is super Sunday because about 2,000 years ago something astounding took place. The great Rabbi who had been put to death by the Jews spent three nights in a tomb and was resurrected.

This was in accordance with the words He had spoken to His apostles while on the earth. Matthew records these words in chapter 20 of his gospel, 17 As Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem, He took the twelve disciples aside by themselves, and on the way He said to them, 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death, 19 and will hand Him over to the Gentiles to mock and scourge and crucify Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.” (17-19, NASB) That third day was the first day of the week, Matthew 28:1. Ever since that day the New Testament church has been worshipping our God on the first day of the week, not the seventh. When we come to worship God it is a super day and there are 52 of them in a year!

Secondly, when we think that one team will win and the other will lose, we realize that when Jesus comes again, some are going to be with Him and others will be with the great deceiver of this world, Satan.

Listen to Jesus in Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.” (NASB)

You do not have to be a loser. Hear God’s word, obey it, and then follow it daily all the days of your life. Then you will not hear these awful words. Let’s all be winners.
